wiresharkWireshark is a complete network analyzer and traffic emerged in Linux under the name Ethereal but with the time and change name has now become multiplatform. Wireshark 1.2, recently released, brings new features such as support for 64 bits, or geolocation of IP addresses.

The latter have added support for OpenStreetMap, a project of free maps and thanks to which it can show the location of the IP address we are monitoring. It has also improved aspects such as printing or installer for Windows 64-bit versions. It also adds support for pcap-ng, the new format capture packets, which will become a standard.

There are more developments, some rather technical, but beyond that maintains the power and flexibility of power filters to monitor all traffic on a local network, wired or wireless, with the analysis and subsequent tcpdump.

Wireshark 1.2 is open source, and there are versions for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.
